Henry Morrison Flagler Museum

📍Flagler Museum, 1 Whitehall Way, Palm Beach
🎟️ Free - $28 • Buy tickets here

Having lived in West Palm Beach my whole life, I’d always heard about the Flagler Museum but never actually visited. Last week, I finally went, and I can’t believe I waited this long. It was totally worth it!

I’ll give you little bit of background on Whitehall (aka the Flagler Museum), but I don’t want to spoil too much. I highly recommend joining one of their tours, they truly bring the story to life as they walk you through the first level of the museum. It’s included with admission.

A Little History

Henry Flagler was one of the founders of Standard Oil and the visionary who helped shape the beautiful South Florida we know today. Flagler built Whitehall in 1902 as a wedding gift for his third wife, Mary Lily.

Whitehall has more than 75 rooms and about 100,000 square feet, all designed in stunning Beaux-Arts style. The home became their winter retreat, where they hosted many elegant gatherings until Flagler’s passing in 1913.

Four years later, Mary Lilly also passed away and the home ended up in the hands of her niece who then sold it to investors. Instead of preserving the home, they turned it into a massive 250+ room hotel in the 1920s, even adding an 11-story tower and altering parts of the original home.

It operated as a hotel until 1959 and was nearly demolished, until Flagler’s granddaughter stepped in and saved it. Thanks to her, the home was restored and opened as the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum the following year.

What To Expect

Upon arriving, you'll see a tall iron and bronze fence that wraps around the whole property. Surprisingly, this is the original fence from 1901, still standing just as it did over a century ago.

As you make your way toward the beautiful white mansion, the towering Doric columns and grand front doors create the feeling that you’re approaching an ancient temple.

When you enter, you’ll see hand painted ceilings, marble everywhere, gold detailings, and sparkling crystal chandeliers so massive some weigh more than a ton. Every room in the home has its own personality, from Flagler’s beautiful library to Mary Lilly’s elegant music room, many still filled with original Gilded Age furnishings.

On the southwest side of the property, you can find the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, a stunning addition to the property that opened in 2005.

Inside the pavilion, you’ll find the museum's cafe, home to the popular Gilded Age style tea service. You will also find Flagler’s fully restored personal railcar, preserved to its original 1912 appearance.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those places that genuinely surprises you. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just love exploring beautiful places, this is one you’ll be glad you finally checked off your Palm Beach list.
