📜 History
The museum is named after George Morikami, one of the last remaining settlers of the Yamato Colony, who donated his land to the county. You can read more about the museum’s history here, and learn more about the young Japanese farmers of the Yamato Colony who once lived in Boca here.

Beyond The Palm Beaches

Everglades City, FL

Last year on my way to Naples, I made a quick stop in Everglades City, and it was way more interesting than I expected. Definitely worth checking out if you’re ever driving by.

📜 History
Everglades City is a small town of less than 500 people, located about 35 miles southeast of Naples. It’s known as the gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands and was once the home to the Calusa, who flourished in the area more than 2,000 years ago. Read more about the city here.

🏫 Museum of the Everglades
The Museum of the Everglades is a small museum in an old commercial laundry building that opened in 1927, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its exhibits explore the history of the area and the settling of “Florida’s Last Frontier”.

🦀 Stone Crabs
Everglades City is the birthplace of the stone crab industry and is known as the stone crab capital of the world, as one of the largest suppliers of stone crab claws. The city also hosts the Everglades Seafood Festival every February, learn more about that here.

🏚️ Smallwood Store & Museum
The Smallwood Store was founded in the early 1900’s by pioneer Ted Smallwood on Chokoloskee Island, serving as a general store, post office, and Indian trading post. Today, it has been preserved as a museum filled with original artifacts that are more than 100 years old.

The store is also known for the shooting of Edgar Watson, an infamous businessman and serial killer tied to the area’s darker history. You can read more about that here.
