Welcome to this edition of The Palm Beach Weekender. A weekly roundup of local weekend events, plus some other cool things happening in your area.
Not too many events going on this weekend, most likely because it’s Labor Day weekend but I’ve packed the Weekly Scoop section with plenty of local news for you to check out.
Also, there was a little glitch in last week’s trivia where it didn’t tell you whether you got the answer right or wrong. The correct answer was Palm Beach Gardens.
I hope you enjoy the long weekend, and see you next Thursday!
In today’s TPBW edition:
🍽️ WPB to get a new Indian restaurant
💲 No more free parking at the Kravis Center
🌴 Summerfest at Mounts Botanical Garden and more

Weekly Scoop
🔚 Sunday on the Waterfront & Screen on the Green are coming to an end
The city of West Palm Beach announced that September will be the final month for Sunday on the Waterfront and Screen on the Green. No word yet on what will replace them, but I’ll keep you updated.
🛒 Whole Foods will open a location in Jupiter
The Shoppes at Jupiter, a shopping center located at the NE corner of US-1 and Indiantown Rd, was just sold to Ram Realty Advisors. Ram is a real estate investment management firm that specializes in multifamily developments and grocery anchored shopping centers. Before closing on the property, they managed to secure a lease with Whole Foods to serve as the property’s primary anchor tenant.
🔜 New restaurant coming soon to Jupiter
The folks behind Food Shack and Leftovers Cafe have announced a brand new restaurant they plan on opening early next year in Jupiter called Sweet Fish.
🇮🇳 New Indian restaurant replacing Sassafras (update)
A couple of weeks ago, I told you about Sassafras closing and that maybe a new Indian restaurant would replace it. Well, it’s now confirmed, Chhauka, a fine dining Indian restaurant, is expected to open either late September or early October. The kitchen will be led by Chef Hemant Mathur, a renowned culinary talent and the first Indian chef in the U.S. to earn a Michelin star and retain it across two NYC restaurants.
💲 No more free parking at the Kravis Center
The Kravis Center announced that starting mid September, they will no longer be offering complimentary parking at their parking garage. It is the last free parking garage in downtown WPB. You will now have to pay using the ParkMobile app or a self pay kiosk.
🦞 Are you a seafood lover? Check out this new spot
Topsail Steamer just opened its doors in Royal Palm Beach. They’re a seafood company that offers single-use steam pots filled with fresh local seafood, meats, veggies and many homemade seasonings. Just take one home, steam it, and enjoy. No prep required for a delicious seafood boil. They are having their grand opening this Saturday at 11929 Southern Blvd, Royal Palm Beach.
🔜 Another restaurant coming to Downtown Lake Worth
The Subculture Group is working on a new restaurant called Man Ray, coming to Downtown Lake Worth. It’ll be similar to Dada in Delray. They are still currently looking for a chef, but the plan is to open in December, taking over the old CWS Bar + Kitchen space.
🚌 Boca Raton will have a self-driving mini bus too
Earlier this year, West Palm Beach introduced a mini self-driving bus that follows a one mile route between CityPlace and the Brightline station. Now, Guident, the company behind the autonomous bus, has announced that this fall they will be launching another self-driving bus in Boca Raton. It’ll operate around the Plaza Real area of Mizner Park from Thursdays to Sundays. If all goes well, they will expand to a longer two mile route.
🎊 Tryst takes over Penelope
Tryst, a popular Delray gastropub that closed a few years back, is making a comeback, but this time in Boca. They are having their grand opening tonight from 7:00 PM to 11:30 PM at 431 Plaza Real, Boca Raton (where Penelope used to be).

Adoptable Pets
Mr. Shultz would love to meet you! This precious old guy just wants to go home with a loving family who he can spoil with cuddle sessions and go on slow, lazy walks. He’s not the smallest pup, but he is pretty low energy and does well with other dogs. And come on, how can you not fall in love with him, look at him!
Brooks says hello! I love his little white mustache, so cute. Like any kitten, he is a ball of energy and curiosity with lots of love to give. This little man is ready to explore the world with his new forever family.

Trivia
To help shipwreck survivors along Florida’s dangerous and isolated east coast, the U.S. government built a series of “Houses of Refuge” in the late 1800s. These simple wooden structures were stocked with basic supplies and manned by keepers who lived on-site with their families. Only ten were ever built, and only one of them was in what we now call Palm Beach County.
Which city in Palm Beach County was home to its only House of Refuge? |
Side Note:
So most of those homes were either destroyed in fires, badly damaged by hurricanes, or eventually demolished. Only one remains, and it’s now a museum in Stuart. I had the chance to visit it a few years ago and loved it. I do recommend joining a volunteer-led tour (it was more of a talk than a guided tour), they do a great job of teaching you about the history of the building. It’s currently closed for restoration, but once it reopens, you can check out the Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge, 301 SE MacArthur Blvd, Stuart.
